Fly Control in Adelaide
Fly control Adelaide homes and food businesses need starts with the breeding source, because the flies on the window are a week old and the maggots that produced them are in a bin, a drain or a compost heap within thirty metres. Symes SA finds the source, treats it, and puts a residual and a bait where adults rest, so the numbers fall and stay down.

Which fly are you dealing with?
House flies breed in bins, pet droppings and compost and rest on walls and ceilings. Blowflies are larger, metallic, and mean meat or a dead animal nearby. Fruit flies are tiny and hover over ripe fruit and the recycling. Drain flies are small, fuzzy and moth-like, sitting on the bathroom wall above a drain that has not been cleaned. Each points to a different source.
| Fly | Looks like | Breeds in | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| House fly | Grey, 6 to 8 mm, rests on walls and ceilings | Wheelie bins, pet droppings, compost, chook pens, lawn clippings | A wet organic source within 30 metres, usually the bin |
| Blowfly | Metallic blue or green, 10 to 14 mm, loud | Meat, dead animals, bins with meat scraps | A carcass in the roof or wall, or meat in an unlined bin |
| Fruit fly (vinegar fly) | Tiny, tan, hovering | Ripe fruit, recycling bottles, fermenting waste | Something fermenting in the kitchen or the recycling crate |
| Drain fly | Small, fuzzy, moth-like, on bathroom walls | The slime layer inside drains, overflow pipes, floor wastes | A drain that needs cleaning, not spraying |
How do we find the breeding source?
By walking the block and opening things: the bin with a wet bottom, the sloppy compost, the dog run, the chook pen, the drain under the outdoor tap, the recycling crate, the clippings behind the shed. A house fly lays in anything wet and organic, and the maggots need only days in summer heat to become the next hundred adults.
- Wheelie binsLiquid in the bottom and scraps on the sides. The single most common source on an Adelaide block.
- Pet droppings and chook pensDaily pickup and a dry pen floor remove the breeding site outright.
- Compost and clippingsA wet heap is a fly nursery. Turned and covered, it is not.
- Drains and floor wastesPipe biofilm breeds drain flies; the gully under the outdoor tap breeds house flies.
- Dead animalsA rat or possum in a roof or wall brings blowflies within days. Removing it is the fix.
- Commercial waste areasGrease traps, bin corrals and loading docks behind food premises.
What is our treatment approach?
Three parts. The breeding sources are treated with a larvicide or removed, so the next generation never emerges. A residual is applied to the surfaces adults rest on, the sunny side of the house, the fence, the bin enclosure, the eaves and the ceiling of the verandah, so flies landing there pick up a dose. A granular fly bait goes down around the bins and the outdoor areas to draw and kill the adults already about.
Inside, the treatment is light: a residual on window surrounds and ceiling corners, nothing on food surfaces. Most fly work happens outside, where they breed and rest. The same yard walk covers the standing water that breeds mosquitoes, which is why a fly visit and a mosquito treatment are often done together.
- SourceLarvicide in bins, drains and pens; carcasses found and removed.
- Resting surfacesResidual on walls, fences, eaves and the bin area where adults land.
- BaitGranular fly bait outdoors to bring down the adults already present.
What does commercial fly control involve?
A cafe, takeaway, butcher or commercial kitchen runs a fly program rather than a one-off treatment, because the sources are permanent: bins, grease traps, deliveries and a back door that opens fifty times a day. The program treats the waste area and drains on the audit schedule, keeps back-of-house surfaces under residual, and documents each visit.
Frequency follows the audit and the season: more often through summer, less through winter. Each visit is invoiced with what was treated and where, so the environmental health officer sees a record. The wider program for food businesses, covering cockroaches and rodents as well, is under commercial pest control.
Drain flies: where do they come from?
From the slime layer inside a drain that has not been used or cleaned. Drain fly larvae live in the biofilm on the pipe wall of floor wastes, shower drains, overflow pipes and the trap of a basin that is rarely used. The adults sit on the bathroom wall above it. Spraying the adults does nothing; cleaning the pipe wall with a brush and an enzyme or foaming drain cleaner removes the breeding site.
Edward finds the drain by taping suspects overnight to see which one catches flies, then treats the biofilm. A drain used daily rarely breeds them; the guest bathroom and laundry floor waste usually do.
How do you prevent flies through summer?
Line the bin and hose it out on collection day, pick up after pets daily, keep the compost turned and covered, run water through every drain weekly, and keep screens closed. A treated exterior does the rest. Flies breed in days in summer heat, so prevention is weekly habits rather than one clean-up.
- Bins
Dry and lined
Bag everything, hose the bin on collection day, and keep the lid closed. A dry bin does not breed house flies.
- Yard
Pets, compost, clippings
Daily pickup, a turned and covered heap, and clippings spread thin or bagged rather than piled wet.
- Drains
Used and clean
Run water through unused drains weekly and clean the slime out of floor wastes and overflows each season.
Fly treatment is quoted after the inspection, on the sources found and the exterior area to treat, and is often added to a home's annual general treatment. Pricing alongside the other outdoor work is on the pest control cost page.
Fly control Adelaide: the three questions people ask
Why do I suddenly have so many flies?
Because a generation has just hatched from a source nearby. In summer heat, house fly eggs laid in a wet bin or pet droppings become adults in about a week, so a sudden swarm means something went wet and organic seven to ten days ago. A sudden burst of large metallic blowflies inside usually means a dead rodent or possum in the roof or a wall, and finding it is the fix.
Do fly baits work indoors?
Not well, and they are not used on food surfaces. Granular fly baits are an outdoor tool, placed around bins, pet areas and the back door to draw adults away from the house and kill them. Indoors, a residual on the window surrounds and ceiling corners where flies rest, and screens that actually close, do more than any bait.
How often do commercial premises need treatment?
On a schedule set by the food safety audit and the season, which usually means more frequent visits through summer when the waste area breeds flies within days, and fewer through winter. Each visit treats the bin corral, drains and back-of-house surfaces and is documented on the invoice for the food safety file, so the environmental health officer sees a program rather than a reaction.
